World's Largest Diamond Found? |
|
As reported by the BBC, a small South African mining company has found what some believe to be the largest diamond in the world. Though few have actually seen the diamond except as shown in the image below.
A diamond of this size would be approximately twice the weight of the diamond that the Cullinan was cut from. The estimated weight puts it around 7000 carats which is a little more that 49 ounces. For those soda loving individuals... thats a bit more than a 7-eleven Super Big Gulp.
Experts who have heard the story and reviewed the image believe the find to be something other than diamond and most likely a flourite crystal. Accoring to Reuters the gem is now "sitting in a Johannesburg bank vault" and will be reviewed by a gemologist shortly.
We could be wrong but we to believe the story to be a hoax as reported by Reuters, ABC, BBC, and others. The crystal from the image does not appear to be formed in the correct crystal structure to be a diamond. |
