Jewelry Manufacturing and Craft School. This is also the oldest craft school in the U.S.OCAC provides an atmosphere that encourages innovation and experimentation, while students master complex techniques. Courses cover the fundamentals of metal-fabrication techniques, surface treatment, and simple stone setting. Students move to casting, hollow and container forms, mechanisms, electroforming, enameling, color on metal, and holloware. Advanced courses include creation of a sterling silver teapot and production design. Lectures on the history of metals and jewelry help students gain an understanding of metalsmithing through time. Whether the work is primarily utilitarian or conceptual, students are encouraged to understand and articulate its foundation and meaning.
Facilities · Equipment for centrifugal and vacuum casting; soldering, annealing; raising and forming; electroforming and plating; enameling; stonecutting and lapidary; oxy-acetylene welding; and tumbling.
Drill presses; rolling mills; hydraulic press; horizontal and vertical bandsaws; metal lathe; chop saw; arc welder; wax injector; vulcanizer; sandblaster; jump and beverly shears; steam cleaner; sanders; grinders; box break; and scroll saw.
