CISGEM is the Public Service for the Regulation of Gem Materials and Precious Metals. It was set up in 1966 by the Ministry of Industry as an office of the Milan Chamber of Commerce. Then in 1984, it was made an external body and became known as CISGEM (Centre for Information and Services in Gemmology). As well as carrying out its principal work of analysis, the Centre provides extensive information on gemmology, through courses, conferences, publications, libraries and museums, not forgetting its work in the field of analysis of cultural treasures. Research and attention are dedicated to establishing standards for the regulation of the market; these complete the sphere of CISGEM's activities.
